On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, promising “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting counsel to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
