Our team is verifying video footage and photographs posted this morning that purport to show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his injuries. A probe is under way.
The initial step to check the location from which the images originated relied on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
