Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.

Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
